MOSCOW FILM MUSEUM'S CLOSURE
Nick HOLDSWORTH
|
MOSCOW –
Campaigners fighting to preserve Moscow's
world-renowned cinema museum – which is being forced to close Dec. 1 – have
issued an open letter calling on President Vladimir Putin
to intervene. The Society of Friends of the Cinema Museum – a group set up to
defend the museum – said that unless urgent government action is taken to
provide suitable new accommodation, a cinematic resource of international
importance could be lost forever. The closure of the museum – which has been
based at Moscow's KinoCenter cinema for the past 15
years – threatens to destroy the city's reputation as a «European film
capital equal to Paris and Berlin,» stated the letter addressed to President Putin and federal culture and cinematography agency head
Mikhail Svidkoi, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, and other senior culture officials.
